The
Problems With UV Ultraviolet
Air Purifiers
We don't use ultraviolet
lamps in our air purifiers or ozone generators.
There are some
serious problems with UV,
Ultraviolet
air
purifiers.
First off UV
light is only going to kill bacteria that it can "see" and come in contact
with.
If the bacteria
does not pass in view of the light it's not going to be killed.
So if a UV
air purifier does not use a fan, or a very slow moving fan, there is very
little chance the light will be able to "see" and kill the bacteria in
a room.
It can ONLY
kill the bacteria it can come in contact with.
Since ozone is
in a gaseous state it can flow all around us and it can come in contact
with much more bacteria than UV
light ever could.
Another problem
is that while UV light
can kill bacteria, most UV
air purifiers use such a low level of ultraviolet
light that they cannot be effective.
While UV
Ultraviolet in duct air purifiers are now
popular, their ozone output is very, very low.
Typically only
25 - 100 mg/hr or less.
UV ultraviolet
lamps are also ineffective in killing mold and bacteria.
This is a direct quote from General
Electric, the manufacturer, concerning their germicidal UV lamps.
"Once mold has already formed, ultraviolet
energy will NOT eliminate it." |
|
Here is a chart that displays the levels
of UV needed to kill bacteria and mold.
Note that the levels to kill mold are much, much higher than to kill even
simple E coli bacteria.
The highest ozone
concentration that can be produced by 185-nm UV lamp is .2 percent by weight,
approximately 10% of the average concentration available by corona discharge
ozone.
These levels
of ultraviolet light needed to kill mold and bacteria are hundreds, even
thousands of more powerful than any UV
air purifier made today.
In other words,
you're never going to find a UV air purifier that comes close to the needed
UV energy levels to kill mold and bacteria.
To the contrary,
our high out put ozone generators can produce the very high levels of ozone
needed to kill bacteria and mold. This is done by blasting High
Ozone Shock Treatments into unoccupied rooms.
Most ultraviolet
ozone generators have no ability to perform High
Ozone Shock Treatments.
Many of our ozone generators have the
ability to purify the air AND to give unoccupied areas High
Ozone Shock Treatments needed to truly kill mold and bacteria.

ozone, and the levels it needs to kill bacteria, on our Ozone
Bacterial and
Mold
Killing Studies page.
MISCONCEPTION:
Some ozone sellers now claim that UV
ozone generators are better because they are unaffected by humidity. They
erroneously claim that a 550 mg/hr UV machine puts out as much ozone as
a 1100 mg/hr machine.
That type of claim is nothing less
than ridiculous.
That's like someone trying to convince
you a $100 dollar bill is worth $200.
Their 550 mg/hr ozone machine is JUST
that, a 550 mg/hr ozone machine!
A 550 mg/hr ozone generator is just
that, a 550 mg/hr ozone generator. It is
NOT
a 1100 mg/hr ozone generator. The MAXIMUM
amount a a 550 mg/hr ozone generator will EVER
put out, of course, is 550 mg/hr.
The competitions 4000 mg/hr UV ozone
generator will put out 4000 mg/hr, not the 10,000 mg/hr that they say it
is equivalent to. It will NEVER put out more
than 4000 mg/hr of ozone.
Claiming a 4000 mg/hr ozone generator
is equivalent to a 10,000 mg/hr ozone machine is not just an insult to
our intelligence, it is an out and out lie.
Also note that UV ozone generators loose
about 20% of their ozone power after the first few hours of operation.
ALL
Our Ozone outputs are rated in HIGH HUMIDITY
environments.
Our 6000 mg/hr
ozone generator puts out 6000 mg/hr even in high humidity environments.
In fact at lower
humidity environments it's ozone output can top 6500 mg/hr.

The
Air-Zone
ozone
generators do NOT
use a ultraviolet bulbs as many other ozone machines use. That is because
our United States
patented ozone element is far more powerful than any UV
bulb made today in terms of ozone output..
Our
ozone elements are literally HUNDREDS of times more powerful than ultraviolet
bulbs.
Why
don't we use Ultraviolet lamps?
Because
they are ineffective in killing mold and germs.
This is a direct quote from General
Electric, the manufacturer of germicidal UV lamps.
"Once mold has already formed, ultraviolet
energy will NOT eliminate it."
Our United States
patented ozone element CAN produce ozone levels that can kill mold!

Purifiers & Ozone Generators

The problems with UV
Ultraviolet in duct air purifiers.
To start with, corona discharge ozone
generators are many times more powerful than UV
lamps.
Some corona units, like ours, are actually
hundreds of times more powerful than the most powerful ultraviolet lamps.
While some may
think that a UV
Lamp used in a duct will treat ALL the air passing by it, this is simply
not so.
UV light
is only going to kill bacteria that it can "see" and come in contact with.
This presents
serious problems in a UV
in duct air purifier.
In fact, just
2 inches from the surface of the glass of a UV
lamp, the UV
efficiency drops more than 80%.
The decline in
ultraviolet
energy then continues to drop exponentially the further away from the lamp
that it is measured.
Since the air
is going to be passing by the UV
purifier at a high rate of speed in the ducts, it will have very little
time to be "seen" by the ultraviolet
light. The limited contact time the ultraviolet
energy has with the bacteria means that very little of the bacteria will
actually be killed by the light.
In plain language
that means since the bacteria will be flying by so quickly in a duct, it
will have very little chance of being killed. It's exposure to the ultraviolet
energy will be extremely limited.
One might think
of the analogy of waving your hand over a candle. If you were to move your
hand quickly through the flame, you would barely feel the heat. But if
you moved your hand slowly through the flame, you would be burned.
The fast moving
bacteria in a duct will simply not have enough exposure time to the UV
light to be killed.
Furthermore five
feet down the duct, or around the first bend, the UV light can no longer
be "seen" by the bacteria, so that NONE
of that already existing bacteria living in the duct will be killed.
Nor will any
of the bacteria be killed that is in the room the duct feeds into, once
again because the UV
light itself will never reach that room.
This is not a
problem with a corona discharge, in duct, ozone generator like our Air-Duct
2000.
With our Air-Duct
2000 unit, the ozone will be fired directly
into the ductwork killing mold and bacteria all throughout the duct. The
ozone will come in contact with all of the bacteria and mold living in
the duct and help to kill it. NOT
just the portion of the duct that the UV
light will be able to "see".
The ozone generated
by the Air-Duct
2000 will be spread throughout the entire
home, thereby purifying air, and killing bacteria in all the rooms.
UV
light must be seen by the bacteria to be killed. Ozone is a gas made from
oxygen, so that it can be spread far easier and more evenly than a simple
UV light source.
Of course some
will say that UV
light is safer than ozone because it only puts out "safe" levels of ozone.
What is safe about UV
light killing only a minute percentage of the bacteria and mold?
Isn't it a MORE
unsafe situation leaving the live bacteria and mold to reproduce in your
ductwork?
Wouldn't it be
better to kill much more of the mold and bacteria than to leave it behind
reproducing in your ducts?
Ultraviolet
in duct air purifiers, with their very low levels of ozone, have no ability
to perform High Ozone Shock
Treatments that are a must for killing mold and bacteria.
The
Air-Duct
2000 literally has hundreds of times more
output than ANY UV
air purifier made.
Yet it has the
safety features of the variable ozone level and the "Burst Timer" to limit
the ozone needed for air purification levels.
The
Air-Duct
2000 is a dual use unit. It can be used
for BOTH low level air purification, and high level ozone blasting when
the area is unoccupied, to help kill mold and bacteria in the ducts and
in the home.
No other UV in
duct air purifier made can make this claim.
In fact most
in duct purifiers aren't even adjustable.
That fact alone
tells us they are under powered, unable to perform a High
Ozone Shock Treatment.
Let's not forget what General
Electric, the manufacturer of germicidal UV
lamps, states about ultraviolet lamps.
"Once mold has already formed, ultraviolet
energy will NOT eliminate it."
