If a basement has a mold problem ozone can be used to kill the mold and it's odor.  But a one time use is not going to solve a mold problem.  It is very tough to kill 100% of the mold in a room. 

While ozone can kill a great percentage of the mold, a slight bit will most likely still remain. 
Even after an ozone shock treatment some mold spores can live.

A few weeks later the mold can begin to grow and multiply and the ozone treatment will need to be repeated.
When this happens you'll have to rent the ozone generator all over again. This can get expensive. 

One begins to realize that the money spent renting a machine has been wasted and it would have been better spent on the purchase of your own ozone generator.

That way when mold or odor problems reoccur you can then blast the area with another unoccupied room High Ozone Shock Treatment whenever you need to.

Some companies rent very low powered ozone generators of 500 mg.hr or less.  That sized ozone machine is simply not powerful enough to kill mold in a basement or to remove serious odors like cigarette smoke. For a 40 x 40 foot basement we recommend at least a 6000 mg/hr ozone generator or larger.

Even if you let the smaller ozone generator run for a week it is not going to have the power to kill all the mold in that large an area. That's because the half life of ozone is less than an hour. The ozone that was created an hour ago is breaking back into oxygen already.

So no matter how long a particular machine is run for it will only produce a certain level of ozone. if the ozone level in the room doesn't hit a certain parts per million concentration it's not going to kill the mold or get rid of the odors you're trying to attack.

Some companies are now renting higher powered ozone machines.  But what kind of ozone generator is it?  Is it an old beat up rental machine? How do you know what they will really be sending you?

Items that people rent are not always well treated. They might not be working at peak performance.
Is it one that uses cheap mica ozone plates that have to be in perfect alignment to produce the rated output?  We think it is a bit much to ask the person renting a machine to become a mica ozone plate expert when all they want to do is get rid of an odor or kill some mold.

Sometimes the cost of a high powered ozone generator is $250 per week AND there is the cost of shipping the unit both ways so the actual rental fee is close to $300.

That's a high price to pay for something that you don't get to keep.
Most companies renting ozone generators also require a security deposit of a credit card authorization of $1000 or more to guarantee that you will return the ozone generator.
That means for the entire time you have their machine they will put $1000 of you money, plus the cost of the ozone rental itself, on hold until you return the machine.  What if the machine is damaged, will they make you pay for it?

Some companies "guarantee" their machines will remove smoke odors or "your money back".
It sounds like a great deal.  Let's talk about the reality of the situation.

Cigarette smoke odors are caused by a layer of tar that has been built up on the surfaces of your home. It is a thick, oil based tar.  The use of an unoccupied high ozone shock treatment can greatly reduce this odor.  The room will smell fresher as the ozone attacks and destroys the odors.

But the ozone cannot actually remove the tar that exists on the surfaces of your home.
What ozone will do is help to neutralize the surface of this tar and kill the odors.

The problem is a few weeks later, long after the rented ozone generator is returned, the odor can start to come back from the tar that remains on the walls and belongings in your home.

We know this to be a fact from the many people who have called us who had previously rented an ozone generator.
They tell us that they want buy an ozone generator because they realize while the ozone did a great job, the original problem has begun to reoccur again over time.

So how long is the "money back guarantee" on the ozone generator rental good for?
What do you do if the mold, or odors come back in a month? Or two months, or three months?
Will the company give you another free rental or refund your money a couple of months later?
We doubt it.  What if the machine is damaged, will they make you pay for it?

If you rent an ozone generator with mica ozone plates there are other problems.
Ozone generators that use mica ozone plates must be in perfect alignment or they simply won't put out the ozone level they are rated at.  Some companies now rent 10,000 mg/hr ozone machines but if they are not cleaned or in perfect alignment their output can be considerably less.

Should the customer have to make sure the mica ozone plates are in perfect alignment, like they should if an ozone rental has been shipped to them?

Why Do Companies Rent Ozone Generators?

You won't find ozone generator manufacturers renting ozone generators.

What you'll find are low level ozone generator dealers, and multi level marketers who rent ozone generators.  You might even find several companies renting the same type of ozone machine.

The reason they don't mind renting instead of selling is the simple fact that they make about the same amount of money if they rent you an ozone generator or sell you one.

Low level ozone dealers only make about 20% on a sale of a machine.  So if they can make $250 or more on a seven day rental they might actually make more money renting ozone machines than selling them.

It is easier for them to rent you an ozone generator, and they make out just as well.

It's a good deal for the ozone dealer, but as we have discussed on this page, renting an ozone generator is not always the best solution for the customer.

Plainly said an ozone generator dealer may not have the customers best interests in mind when they rent them an ozone generator.
